Packing the Stamp

The tiny little square where all your faces were initially found is the stamp area. Once you have all your faces separated and ensured that the texture isn't distorted, the next step is to put all the faces back inside that little square area. Effectively this will define all the UV coordinates to be somewhere from 0 to 1.

At this point in the unwrap process, the following operations can be done:

  • move

  • rotate

  • uniform scale only! doing a vertical or horizontal scale will cause texture to be distorted.

Process

  • Start with the piece that requires the most details... typically these are things with writing, sharp images, detailed patterns or very large surfaces with details.

  • In uv editor use marquee selection to select the entire piece

  • move the piece into the stamp area and then scale the piece using uniform scale. Give it as much space as you desire. The more space it takes, the sharper the details... if its something like a sign you may make it stretch across the entire stamp so that the details will be really crisp.

  • The amount of space you give a piece is related to its level detail not the size of the object within the model

  • Repeat the process and fill up the stamp. Ideally all the area in the stamp is used.
